2/22/12 - Giving up Added Sugar & Refined Carbs
So today marks the beginning of Lent.  I was raised Catholic, but I’m not practicing now, nor do I really believe in organized religion anymore.
However I was noticing people giving things up like alcohol, facebook, chocolate, etc… And it got me to thinking about how I’ve been slipping up on my diet a lot lately.  I’m not really using food as fuel and my sugar addiction has come back to bite me.  I’m not fueling like a champion and I’m not honoring the divine in me by eating garbage, so I decided to observe Lent this year or part of it at least.  
From now till March 17th, St. Patrick’s Day, I’ll be giving up added sugar and refined carbohydrates.  There are a few exceptions which I’m not willing to part with (Shot Blocks, Shot Gels, Sports Drinks, and Luna Bars).  All of these are pretty key in helping me train for my half marathon, and I’m to close to the race date to change how I fuel when I run.  
This actually has very little to do with Lent, and more to do with getting myself back on track and treating my body better.  I feel better and I perform better when I’m craving fruit instead of ice cream.
